Everyone in life has hopes and dreams, but too often we are scared to act on our hopes because we are worried we might fail. That's exactly the wrong attitude to take, and it's the point that American explorer and dogsled driver Norman Vaughan was making with today's quote:
"Dream big and dare to fail."
Vaughan led a rather amazing life that included competing in the Olympics, participating in an expedition to Antarctica, climbing mountains, having a mountain named in his honor, serving in World War II and in Korea, and even appearing on The Tonight Show.
From my limited knowledge of him, he definitely seems like someone who had big dreams and was not afraid to try to reach them. I'm sure that he failed at times, but in the grand scheme of things it did not matter because he achieved other dreams.
Too often in life, all of us have things we want to do, but we are worried about taking the step needed to achieve these goals. Whether it is opening a new business, taking a class in school, asking out a guy or girl you like, performing in front of a crowd, or a million other items, I bet that you have dreams that you would like to take on.
Now it may not be practical to go out and quit you job today so that you can become a professional juggler. and if you are in your 40s like I am you may not make it to the NBA if that is your goal.
At the same time, though, that doesn't mean that you can't start working towards those goals today and see where you get. If you really want to juggle, for example, you can start learning how to do it well so that you eventually can perform in front of people. And I agree that you probably won't play in the NBA, but maybe you can start to play regularly or you can get into coaching and see where you go with it.
It doesn't matter who you are, where you live or what your situation is in life. You need to dream big and quit worrying about what happens if you don't achieve your dreams. If you don't make it to your goal, I'll bet you'll still be happy with how far you make it and you'll realize that failing isn't that bad after all. It's much better than never trying, and it's also better than just dreaming.
I'm not expecting you to go to Antarctica or to get on The Tonight Show this week, but I am expecting you to set some lofty goals for yourself and to get started on achieving them.
Dream big and dare to fail.
